Orthodoxx3d.'s thoughts
Song Meaning:
I'm actually going to step back from "orthodoxx3d." the artist for this breakdown seeing as this is the first one I'm doing for it.
"Double agent" was one of the first songs I wrote as orthodoxx3d. - actually the third of the first five. I'm a huge advocate for using EVERYTHING you create in some way, shape or form, so this song would have been used at some point. Looking back, "double agent" was the perfect song to start orthodoxx3d. with because of how it has set the tone for the artistic direction of this project.
There are many themes that "double agent" has planted for the future that I am excited to unpack and unveil, but I can't say too much now. :)
Essentially, "double agent" speaks about the nature of portraying something publicly contrary or opposite to what or who you are truly. It intends to discuss the infiltration of the world around us. It speaks on allowing yourself to be labelled as something you're not because you're so secure in who you are that it doesn't bother you when you do get mislabeled. Someone might tell you "oh, you're this and not this" and you let them roll with that assumption because maybe letting them believe that about you is so far off from the truth that it's better let them keep going in that self-deception. There's definitely a time and place where correction needs to occur however.
Spiritually, a lot of this stems from a Bible passage where we as people who follow God and Christ are called to live in the world but not be OF the world - I believe it's John 17:15-16 but check it for yourself to confirm it. In that same way, we function like the double agents of WWII, such as Juan Pujol Garcia. Juan was loyal to the United Kingdom and collected information from Germany. Where we differ is that Juan wouldn't try to change Germany's mind on what they were doing, where as my role as someone who follows God as a double agent would be to change those around them upon exposing them to the truth. It's a fine and difficult line to walk, but it's ultimately what we're called to do.

While it doesn't speak directly to the spiritual themes I already mentioned earlier about "double agent," there is a LOT of spiritual energy and commentary in this chorus. Umm, where should I start?
First of all, people who hear this might think this is a criticism of authority - and it is, I have problems with trusting authority, like many people in this generation. Most people tend to think of God in terms of authority, which is fair, He does hold all authority for right reason...the authority I'm coming at here is who we've put in power as humans. Government, celebrities, the ultra-rich...I don't wish negative things on them, or anyone for that matter, but they force us to comply with the system they've built for their benefit.
I remember for the season when I was working full-time, there was no wiggle room for unexpected absence or if life hit all of the sudden. When my grandma died, I got one day off for the funeral, and to be honest I think the lack of time to properly process that has put a lot of apathy in me still to this day. I got ONE day off from work, literally there was no time to die (James Bond, spy, acting as a double agent, get what I'm saying?) or to rest in peace or to say goodbye - because we were expected back on the clock the next day like everything was normal, even when it wasn't.
Now, this is where things get a little too ambiguous for my liking. The line making me your spy isn't targeted at God because God gives us rest. However, there is someone who wants to use us to spy on God and bring things of value - our lives and souls - back to him, and "him" is the devil. We look at the world and see all that Satan has corrupted through letting humanity be human - self-interested to the point of idolization, where if that isn't who you are like everyone who is "above" you, then you don't fit in, and you're going to pay the price - not having the time to say goodbye, rest or even die, forcing your compliance in a painful, excruciating way with you grinding your own teeth down to cope. This song isn't a rebellion against God, it's a rejection of the world of self-interest that has been built around us that it is nearly impossible to detach from. This makes even more sense when you look at the verses too:
being labelled a traitor to your generation for not falling in line,
feeling isolated because you aren't like everyone else in the world of self-interest,
being accused of doing things you never did,
I could go on and on, it's literally all there in the song.
What I Like Most About The Song:
This is my favourite song that I've made to date, because it inadvertently has created an entire new world that I'm so excited to explore and show to others. My hope is that this world would make people think, it would make them question things and want to break free from the status quo and evaluate their own relationship with their desires. "Double agent" is merely just the start and entry point to a world of critical thinking and reflection, with moody and energetic production simply being the medium for the message.
