Orthodoxx3d.'s thoughts
Song Meaning:
I wrote "Npc u later" as a critique of how predictable everything has become in our everyday lives. You know, like we get stuck in the same rhythms of doing this and doing that and essentially settle for living this life of boring comfort and security. The most "uncomfortable" thing that someone does to "break the mold" and feel like they aren't an NPC is posting something slightly controversial or commenting something mildly irritating.
We've kind of been pacified to the point of doing nothing of note or significance and feeling like we're accomplishing these huge achievements, when our everyday lives aren't creating anything of impact. Gosh this is going to be corny, but we gotta say "see you later" to all these NPCs!
Of course, when I say "NPCs" I don't mean the people themselves. But we do need to get back to taking more risks as a people once again. The risks I take are limited to the creative, but we need people to take more risks in terms of their areas of expertise. Security leads to comfort - which is fine - but leads to extreme comfort, which leads to sloth and laziness - which I believe is a sin and an under-optimization of what humanity was created to do.
And that's what I think the song really means to me. It's a rejection of the idol of comfort and security that so many have placed on the pedestal of their lives. FYI, there's a spiritual message here. God made you for more than slaving away at your job and performing activism behind a social media screen to feel accomplished. Get up and actually do something with your life instead of being an NPC like everyone else. You settling for what you have is respectfully, a failure of a life.
Favourite Lines:
Definitely the chorus.
"It's so predictable,
How I'm so cynical,
Let's not get physical,
Don't be so critical,
I know I'm better as an,
An individual,
An individual,
You're so predictable,
It's why I'm cynical,
It's why I'm critical,
I know I'm good alone,
An individual,
I'll NPC you later,"
I like it just because it's kind of a call-out of this NPC behaviour. Of course, I admit my own flaws in pedestalizing individualism - but I believe it's been developed in response to this NPC-like culture surrounding me. I don't want to blame the culture for how I turned out, that seems like low-hanging fruit- but we are products of our surroundings, and where there's smoke there's usually fire. It is what it is, and it takes really getting out of that environment to realize what it's done to you.
What I Like Most About The Song:
Overall I'm really happy with how the song ties in the characteristics of being an NPC. I played a lot of video games growing up, especially RPGs, and the NPCs in those games add a lot of life to the game's universe. NPCs in real life however...don't really do that, they make it irritating. So I'm overall really glad with how the source material got integrated.
